Headed to Hangout: Miike Snow - Genghis Khan

BRAND NEW ALERT!!
Hangout Music Festival 2016 Lineup

Feels like: Yuksek, Robert DeLong, Phantogram, The Naked and Famous, STRFKR, Stepdad

Yeah, we are going to Hangout Music Fest again this year and yeah we couldn't be more excited about the lineup.  This is the first year they sort of abandoned having classic headliners and focused on getting a glutton of talent from top to bottom.  And yes, I'm sure many of you know Miike Snow, but I can go ahead and guarantee you haven't heard this first single off their upcoming album.  Give it a listen, get it stuck in your head, and join us in May at the beach.

Under the Covers: Lake Street Dive - Bohemian Rhapsody

Feels Like: Roy Orbison, Leon Bridges, Rhiannon Giddens

Taking on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" is quite a challenge. Covering it as well as injecting some added humor is a double challenge. Lake Street Dive succeed on both accounts. Here's hoping Halloween covers from them become an annual treat.

Owen Thiele x Zack Sekoff - II. Run

Feels Like: Erykah Badu, Gallant, M&O, Cool Company

Back in business ladies and gents! I know that with today being Halloween, it might seem appropriate to point you in the direction of some dark erie rock ballad done by a guy or gal who caught all the creepy feels. I, however, am going to shelf that idea for the time being because Owen Thiele has put out some head bobbing, 90's-feeling, old school R&B jam and this music needs to be shared. II.Run comes off of his June debut EP, Without. Check out the video below and enjoy the brighter side of this spooky day.

Delta Rae - Bottom of the River

Feels Like: Some spooky shit

Happy Halloween from EB!

Family and Friends - Amadeus

image

Feels like: Mumford and Sons, The Head and the Heart, Run River North, Langhorne Slim

I hope you folks loved Calvin and Hobbes as much as I did growing up [and now].  This video is just a great take on childhood imagination.  Plus these guys are hella talented, they are going to be huge.

Ch-Ching - Chairlift

Feels like: Beyonce, Phantogram, Jai Paul

Ready for a new anthem?  Time to get lucky: 27-99-23.

Turbo Fruits - No Reason To Stay

Feels like: The Strokes, Artic Monkeys, Interpol, The Bravery

I just love this video showing off lots of the best places you can find in Nashville.  Also, the song is so darn catchy, just like Reptilia by The Strokes or Slow Poison by The Bravery.

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

Young Knives - White Sands

Feels like: Reptar, Rubblebucket, Bloc Party

These guys are one of my favorite bands from freshman year of college.  I traveled to Barcelona for a summer abroad and hear them for the first time and was hooked.  This is a newer song from them and really sounds like Reptar being fronted by Kele Okereke from Bloc Party.

Dawes - All Your Favorite Bands

Feels like: good old classic Dawes.  Also everything that Pilgrimage fest is about.

Check out one of our favorite bands, Dawes, singing a ballad with the help of plenty more of our favorite bands [I spot Delta Spirit, Deer Tick, The Killers, Shovels and Rope and My Morning Jacket to name a few].  Really lovely song and a great video too.

Wednesday, September 2, 2015

Phil Cook - Great Tide

Feels like: Punch Brothers, Family and Friends, Mumford and Sons, Matt Corby

Check out this great song from Phil Cook.  His new album is coming out September 11th, but you can go stream the whole thing right now over at AV Club.  Pretty much awesome stuff, so get your butt over there and listen to it.

Yelawolf - American You/Till It's Gone

Feels like: Uncle Kracker, Kid Rock, Big KRIT, Rittz, Eminem

Yelawolf has really come into his own lately.  He still has that quick flow and hard hitting lyrics, but he is finally finding the perfect melody to put his spin on.  I love the True Detective/Bloodlines feel to his songs, and I really think he is getting that whole Southern grind right.  Check out the two songs that I feel best embody his vision.

Toro y Moi - Lilly/109

Feels like: Pink Floyd, MGMT, Neon Indian, How to Dress Well

So I just realized we have never posted Toro y Moi which is a real crime against y'all because they are awesome.  Check out my top hit, "Lilly" off their newest album "What For?" and also my all time favorite of their's "109".

Sage Williams - Homecoming/Pink Cocaine

Feels Like:  Wyclef Jean, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Action Bronson

The best new Southern Hip Hop isn’t coming out of Houston or NOLA, but from an almost criminally unknown 19 year old kid out of Birmingham’s (almost) nonexistent rap scene…no offense Gucci Mane. Sage Williams has taken the soul of Birmingham that has made it a great (and IMO underrated) music scene and developed his own style that is great for the bedroom or you’re Friday night pregame. Hard to believe this kid has been putting out straight fire since he was 17 and shows no signs of slowing down. Jump on this bandwagon early (<1,000 Spotify listens and <100 YouTube hits…whaaaa) and start impressing your friends with your underground hip hop knowledge today.

Urban Cone - Come Back to Me [feat Tove Lo]/Sadness Disease

Feels like: Trails and Ways, Cub Sport, Wildcat! Wildcat!, Friendly Fires, Little Daylight

Summer is the air.  Get on it today with Urban Cone!

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

Under the Covers: Digital Witness - SOAK [St. Vincent Cover]

Feels like: Tennis, Misterwives, Rubblebucket, Chet Faker, Slyvan Esso

This is the new song for Apple's latest ad scheme.  I love it, and while it is very different than the original, they both are quite awesome.

Shamir - Call It Off

Feels like: Tuneyards, Reptar, Rubblebucket, MIA

This dude has a very unique sound and some pretty awesome videos.  Give my favorite a view right here!

Thursday, May 21, 2015

Super Duper Kyle - Fruit Snacks/Love 4 You

Feels like: Childish Gambino, Shad, Chance the Rapper

Silly. Catchy. Great.  Just give it a listen.

Tame Impala - 'Cause I'm A Man

Feels like: How to Dress Well

Welcome back from Hangout Fest! Here's a great one to kick off your summer in the best way possible.

Under the Covers: Reptilia - The Strokes [Punch Brothers Cover]

Feels like: a stripped down version of one of the best songs The Strokes ever wrote

I have always loved this song.  When I was first learning how to play guitar with a group of similar aged ragamuffins, we decided this song would be our first cover.  We practiced many an afternoon in the basements, living rooms and garages of our parents houses.  Sure we were great, probably one of the best 4-7 man [depending on the day] bands of our area.  Unfortunately, our premiere performance, on my 17th birthday in the living room of my parents house with 50 or so of our nearest and dearest friends, was not quite as magical as we had planned. "Ninjas 17 only" was our band name...it was actually just "Ninjas" but my mom tried to make a sign for the drum kit explaining the youngest two members of the band had turned 17 that day.  And while I may never make it to AV Club for their "Undercover" section, this song has always held a dear place in my heart.  So it was pretty much awesome when I stumbled upon this gem today.  Now I present to you a classic reimagined by Punch Brothers.

Deepspace - yeahyeahyeah

Feels like: M83, KS Rhoads, BØRNS

Well, we just got an email submission, and I have to say, I really like it.  Give it a listen here!

Night Riots - Remedy

Feels like: The Killers, Grouplove, The 1975, The Colourist

Hey all you Nashvillains, come out tonight to Mercy Lounge to see Hippo Campus, The Mowglis, and these California rockers, Night Riots!  The lead singer has a very distinctive Brandon Flowers-esque voice and their melodies swing between Grouplove and The 1975.  Give them a listen here, then join us tonight for their show!  See y'all there!

The Suffers - Make Some Room

Feels Like: St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Lake Street Dive, The Shadowboxers, Jill Scott

With a classic feel that takes you home to some of mama's old-fashioned good cookin', The Suffers bring you a video that features none other than just that. This smooth soul jam is perfect for the season and will be a standby of mine for weeks to come as spring comes into full form. My favorite line has got to be "Well, do you want a sandwich?", which is actually not put forward sarcastically. Side bar: Do we now live a society where we cannot offer sandwiches to each other without assuming sarcasm is at play? Everybody likes fucking sandwiches! In any case I bet you will like the title track release from The Suffers' debut EP. Check out the video below.

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

BØRNS - 10,000 Emerald Pools

Feels like: Gardens and Villa, The Griswolds, Sir Sly, Jinja Safari, Vacationer

Sometimes you just hear those songs that from the first note you are taken.  BØRNS just has all of that sexy, eerie, happy and wonderful sound from the word go.  Gotta gotta give them a listen right now!

The Wind and the Wave - It's a Longer Road to California Than I Thought

Feels like: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Shakey Graves, Shovels and Rope, Family and Friends

I know these guys are getting radio time here in Nashville [I have to believe largely in part to this post], but I realize some of you are not living down the road from us anymore.  I think you need to give them a listen, they have quite a few really nice songs, and they are right on time with this beautiful spring around us.

Monday, April 13, 2015

Mumford and Sons - The Wolf

Feels like: Foo Fighters got busy with Of Monsters and Men or Kings of Leon mated with The Head and the Heart or AWOLNATION mixed it with Family and Friends

Mumford and Sons are definitely going mainstream...but wait, they were already the new mainstream? I don't really care because I really like this new sound, and we can always use more rock gods like Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon.  Definitely worth a few listens.

Friday, April 10, 2015

Regal Degal - Delicious

Feels like: Slam Donahue, Fires of Rome, Best Coast, Cults

Happy Friday everybody!

Thursday, April 2, 2015

Trails and Ways - Skeletons

Feels like: Passion Pit, Houses, Active Child, Washed Out, M83

Sure it's Thursday, but there is no work tomorrow, so the weekend starts now!  Get your good vibes on with this brand new release from Trails and Ways!

Under the Covers: Imagine Dragons - Stolen Dance [Milky Chance Cover]

Feels like: Vance Joy, Sam Smith, Family of the Year, Dirty Gold, Wake Owl, Matrimony, Slam Donahue

Do you miss Gotye's "Somebody that I used to know"?  Ready to get addicted again?  Well here is one of the most addicting songs of the past few months "Stolen Dance" being covered by our second favorite Las Vegas band, Imagine Dragons [sorry guys, the Killers will always be one of my favorite all time].  Give it a click, I promise you'll have it stuck in your head in no time.  Also, I made the artwork above, no big deal.

Headed to Hangout: Charles Bradley and his Extraordinaires - The World [Is Going Up In Flames]

Feels like: Otis Redding, James Brown, Mavis Staples, Alabama Shakes

So we've had the distinct pleasure of seeing this man, this legend, this hero, give his all at a live performance.  He is the king of cool, the screamin eagle of soul, and he is gracing us with an appearance at Hangout Fest this summer.  I can't wait to be at the front row for all of his hip thrusting, chest stroking and James Brown splitting antics.  See y'all there!

Monday, March 16, 2015

The Whigs - Kill Me Carolyne/The Particular

Feels like: Deer Tick, The Orwells, Delta Spirit, Dr. Dog, Benjamin Booker, J Roddy Walston and the Business

We had the absolute pleasure of seeing The Whigs last night live at 3rd and Lindsley.  Once again they put on a hell of a show of pure rock and roll.  If you haven't seen these guys live, you really need to get on that.  I saw them way back at the Star 94 Jingle Jam in 2003 where they opened for Jessica Simpson, Sarah McLachlan and Bare Naked Ladies [I know, that is the most random lineup ever].  They are a huge talent out of Athens and I hope they keep bringing us great music.  So without further ado, I present an older favorite of theirs "Kill Me Carolyne" and then my absolute favorite off their new album "The Particular".

Reptar - Cable

Sounds like: Bloc Party, Talking Heads, The Cars, Vacationer, Rubblebucket

Well here we go!  Another awesome album on the way from one of our absolute favorites Reptar.  These guys are just plain good at making weird and funky into catchy and hella good all at once.  This new one is a great preview of what I hope is on the way from the new album "Lurid Glow" coming out March 31st.

We met these guys at Hangoutfest 2 years ago, and then again at Bonnaroo.  If you have the chance to catch them live, I promise you, it is quite the show.  They have so much energy and fun, and it always turns into an awesome dance party.  And not surprisingly, these guys are from partyville Athens, GA, where the good times and great music are always walking hand in hand.  Now do yourself a favor and clickey clickey on play.

Thursday, February 12, 2015

Matt and Kim - Hey Now

Feels like: Lorde, Ra Ra Riot, Vampire Weekend, Grouplove

Just a good old fashioned time from Matt and Kim.  Have a time right now!

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Bahamas - Lost in the Light

Feels like: Alabama Shakes, Ivan and Alyosha, Wake Owl, Typhoon, The Apache Relay, Dawes

Middle of the week got you down?  Get a little spiritual lift from Bahamas.  Quite a great tune and sure to feel it all the way down to your bones.

Friday, January 16, 2015

Matt and Kim - Get It

Feels like: Childish Gambino, Lorde, Vampire Weekend, Grouplove

Gotta love those straight up get down and boogie jams.  I already loved Matt and Kim, largely because their shows are so damn exciting, and this video gives you a pretty good taste for that.

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

Lucius - Two Of Us On The Run

Feels like: Keaton Henson, Run River North, Family and Friends, Iron and Wine, Lord Huron, The Shins

Second post of the New Year...Two of us on the run.  Get it?  But honestly this song is really quite awesome and will get stuck in your head guaranteed.  Feels like it fits right on the Garden State soundtrack.

Feels like: Jack White, The Strokes, TV on the Radio
