Sounds Like: The Avett Brothers, The Wood Brothers, Jackie Greene
I stumbled across this song the other day, and this upbeat contemporary take on Sam Cooke's smooth soul classic really caught my attention. Little did I know, that I may have been last to jump on the Ben Sollee train, as this cover was originally recorded back in 2008. Regardless of it's relative 'newness', Ben really does take fresh look at this traditionally mellow and somber piece. The song's message, in it's original form, strikes a chord with the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the need for serious change in a society that was fighting over it's common perspective on equality. For me, Mr. Sollee's cover has a lighter take on the topic of change. The song's tone reminds me of change's inevitability and my option to look forward to it as a tough, but necessary, part of life. Check out Ben's jazzed up version here and let me know what you think!
