Pete Philly & Perquisite have been one of my favorite groups since I first heard them in 2006 during a backpacking trip to Amsterdam. This duo got more playtime than any other group or artist in my college dorm room and they were even my very first Pandora station way back in the day. MC Pieter "Pete Philly" Monzon originally from Aruba, gives the duo its smooth and poetic voice while cellist Pieter "Prequisite" Perquin produces and supplies the clean bass lines that I have fallen in love with. The group put out three albums from 2003-2009 which earned critical acclaim across Europe, however they never really made it across the pond to the US. A creamy blend of hip-hop, jazz, funk, and soul, Pete Philly & Perquisite provides the perfect soundtrack for a hungover Sunday morning or as a nice change of pace in your pre-game music mix. They have since gone their separate ways but dont fret, both continue to put out music that is definitely worth checking out. Pete Philly & Perquisite
hold a very special place in my heart as they redefined what hip-hop music meant to me, and are responsible for my love of jazz, soul, and trip-hop.
