Dirty Projectors - Gun Has No Trigger/Ascending Melody

Feels like: Edward Sharpe playing dubstep, Devendra Banhart

We had the pleasure of seeing these guys play with Pop Etc. at the Cannery a couple of weeks ago.  The show was spectacular and honestly this band is a must see.  The recordings do not demonstrate the amount of rhythms, pitches and melodies that are all happening simultaneously.  It is a true experience.  Enjoy!

JD McPherson - North Side Gal

Feels Like: Ray Charles, Jerry Lewis, Justin Townes Earle, Rubblebucket
I got one to share. This one goes out to my roomate Whit (he gave that weird "birds coming out of the nest" analogy a while back). He has graced my ears a new jib to shake to. Yes, that is appropriate language for the song. This is a new guy called JD McPhearon. This is a honestly a new take on classic rockabilly. When I put this through my iTunes Genius a bizzare mix of new school hip-hop, old school crooners and modern rock came up. I leave it to you to figue that one out. Warning: extremely catchy.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Farenheit Fair Enough

Feels Like: Apparat, edIT, Ulrich Schnauss, Múm

This one is a perfect cool "chill sesh" song. Telfon Tel Aviv comes out of New Orleans, LA and I have been listening for quite a while. They put forth a glitchy trip-hop sound that I can get down to, but at the same time just relax and absorb. The band sadly lost one of its members in 2009. However, I have been listening to this one for a while nonetheless, and I hope you will be too. Pull up a chair and just feel this one.

YesYou - Frivolous Life [ft. Marcus Azon of Jinja Safari]/Half of It

Feels like: RAC, Foster the People, Yeasayer, Pop Etc., Wildcat! Wildcat!, LexiconDon

Check out YesYou's latest single "Frivolous Life" with Marcus Azon of Jinja Safari.  It is a great collaboration and if you have been searching for the next Foster the People, this very well could be it.  Also, if you love Wildcat! Wildcat! as much as I do, be sure to check out "Half of it".  Yay! Music!

Stalley - Everything New/Petrin Hill Peonies

Feels like: Kanye West, Wale, Meek Mill, Rick Ross, MMG

My response to the Rowdy's last post "Thrift Shop" - "Everything New".  Also seriously check out Stalley's killer single "Petrin Hill Peonies".  My roommate Chason turned me on to this epic track.  Enjoy.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop Feat. Wanz

Feels Like: Classified, Hoodie Allen, Chiddy Bang

Fur coats+Hawaiian shirts+onesies+horndriven beat+a cold ass honky=JAM.

Lord Huron - Man Who Lives Forever

Feels Like: Fleet Foxes, Panda Bear, Grimes
Remember when I said that Lord Huron was a sign of good thing to come? I'll go ahead and count this as one of those good things. This recording comes from a Rollo & Grady session and the song is due to be included in the band's debut Lonesome Dreams. For all of you Nashvillians, you can catch them at The High Watt on September 29th. Come and check them out.

Yo Nashville: Rayland Baxter - The Mtn Song

Feels like: Fleet Foxes, Andrew Combs, Phosphorescent

This Nashville songwriter's sound is more Laurel Canyon than Honky Tonk swing and  is perfect listening for those late summer days.  Mr. Baxter's debut album feathers & fishHooks is due out tomorrow via ATO records, and for those in Nashville, you can catch him tomorrow at Grimey's at 6 for his record release party or September 6th at War Memorial Auditorium playing with the Secret Sisters.

Yo Nashville is a segment in which we highlight local talent from here in Music City U.S.A.

Jinja Safari and Kinfe - Silence of the Guns

Feels like: Amadou and Miriam, K'naan, tUnE-yArDs, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Check out Jinja Safari's latest baby "Silence of the Guns" with collaborator Kinfe for the Key of Sea.  Very happy, tribal, fun and magical: basically everything that makes Jinja Safari who they are.  Enjoy!

Youngblood Hawke - We Come Running/Stars

Feels like: Fixers, Walk the Moon, Foster the People, Yuksek, Carolina Liar

Check out this awesome band from LA.  Very epic feel and lovely songs.  Their self-titled EP debuted Tuesday.  Get it while it's very hot!

I Break Horses - Winter Beats

Feels Like: M83, Passion Pit, Memoryhouse
There is a story behind this wintery beat. These guys came through Marathon Music Works in Nashville, opening for M83, back in May. My coblogger Miguel had told me about this swedish band opening up for M83 and I really got into it. Much to our dismay, we arrived at the concert after they had already opened. I also discovered at that point that I had left my ticket back at the house. Double dismay. On a happier note check out the Stockholm duo and their far from dreary beats. The video reminds of Passion Pit in the disparity of a light up tempo melody put in contrast with the black and white ominous imagery.

The Neighbourhood - Female Robbery

Feels like: Mint Royale, Bonobo, Pretty Lights, Mike Posner

In a Hitchcock-esque thriller video, The NBHD brings us a bit of something tragic.  Also check out their single "Sweater Weather" below.  Chill out and enjoy.

Major Lazer - Get Free

Feels Like: Santigold, Dirty Projectors, Vacationer

Major Lazer dropped the visuals for the first single "Get Free" from their upcoming Switch-less second album, Free the Universe.  The song, which is a lot mire mellow than past Major Lazer releases and features Amber Coffman of the Dirty Projectors on vocals, is accompanied by a video featuring all the imagery that has become associated with the project since its inception: Caribbean streets, crowded dancehalls, and lots of rump shaking. Enjoy!

Killer Mike - Untiitled

Feels Like: Outkast, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, T.I.

Throwing some old-school ATL scuzz your way in the form of the new Killer Mike track, "Untitled" and its accompanying Art History lesson of a video.  Keep it trill brethren.

Hey Rosetta - Welcome (Blogtheque Version)

Feels Like: The Lumineers, The Head and the Heart, Typhoon
So I already know. I have been slacking. I realize this and, believe me, this does not please me. However, I come to bringing very good jams. This one comes from the Canadian group Hey Rosetta! from a special recording commissioned by Blogtheque. No lie, I just came from seeing The Lumineers play an awesome show last night at Cannery Ballroom and the whole stomp-americana vibe has got me hooked. This rousing acoustic slap happy acoustic rendition of "Welcome" is of this vein an definitely a keeper. Check it.

Yo Nashville: PUJOL - Keeper of Atlantis

Feels like: Japandroids, Pete & the Pirates, JEFF the Brotherhood

Nashvillian Daniel Pujol hit Bonnaroo's Jam in the Van during his trip to the beloved farm in Manchester.  Performing solo, PUJOL runs through the killer tune "Keeper of Atlantis" from recent release, United States of Being.  PUJOL will be performing this Saturday at Nashville Cream's Sixth Anniversary Party at Mercy Lounge alongside Wild Cub, Natural Child and more! We'll see you there!

Pretty Lights - We Must Go On

Feels like: Bonobo, Blockhead, The Neighbourhood, Mint Royale

A chill song for a nice afternoon.  This is old school Pretty Lights, before the bass dropped.  Enjoy.

Muse - Madness

Feels like: TV on the Radio, U2, Bloc Party

Muse have dropped the second single for their upcoming album The 2nd Law.  While the previous, and not that great, single hinted at a full-on dubstep opus of an album, the second single turns the wamp down a little to pleasing results. Guitarist Matt Bellamy plugs in for a nice little guitar solo as well.

Under the Covers: Dr. Dog - Heart It Races (Architecture in Helsinki cover)

Feels like: Jinja Safari, Peter Bjorn and John, The Shins, The Black Keys, Spoon, Los Campesinos!

Here is one of my favorite all time covers.  It trumps the original in such a new and fun way that it basically is its own song.  Watch Dr. Dog cover it at their Guitar Center Live set.  Enjoy!

Under the Covers is a segment where favorite songs are covered in a refreshing way.

Stepdad - Must Land Running/My Leather, My Fur, My Nails

Feels like: Reptar, Jinja Safari, MGMT, Of Montreal, Foster the People, Walk the Moon, Brandon Jazz

Y'all are in for a real treat.  This video is very reminiscent of those epic 30 Seconds to Mars videos of yore.  I am loving the sound and think you will too.  Also check out their single "My Leather, My Fur, My Nails" below.  Enjoy your Friday.

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Bloc Party - V.A.L.I.S.

Feels like: We are Scientists, Maximo Park, Black Kids, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Arcade Fire, Kele

Yo Nashville: Cherub - Doses and Mimosas

Feels like: Metronomy, Wild Cub, Electric Guest, Snicklefritz, Brandon Jazz

Polica - Dark Star/Lay your cards out

Feels like: Gardens & Villa, Cherub, Pop Etc, Magic Wands, Magic Man, Frank + Derol

Well this one just fell in my lap.  I've been trying to introduce Polica for a while and they just debuted their newest video above.  Also check out my favorite song by them, "Lay your cards out" below.  Catch their show September 28th at the High Watt.

Walter Meego - Forever

Feels like: Pop Etc, LexiconDon, Starf***er, Tom Vek, Wild Cub, Electric Guest, Gardens & Villa

After two amazing nights at the Cannery [Dawes on Sunday and Dirty Projectors w/ Pop Etc] I have decided it is time to whip out a gem I've been saving for a slow day.  Enjoy chilled.

Monday, August 13, 2012

LexiconDon - Burn

Feels like: Wildcat! Wildcat!, Phantogram, The XX, Electric Guest

Check out LexiconDon's newest single "Burn".  Perfect chill music for today's rainy day.

Yo Nashville - Echo Group - ALL THE BOOKS

Feels Like: Lumineers, Dawes, Of Monsters and Men, Horse Feathers
Doubling up on posts as I tend to do when I have not blogged in a while. However, I am excited because this is my first Yo Nashville blog post. So in lieu of talking around the point and possibly making this band look less awesome than they are I just going to pull straight from the band's bio. It reads:
Formed in the fall of 2011 by veteran Nashville musicians Justin Webb, Benjamin Moore, Will Pettus, J Stoyanov and Bryan Moore, Echo Group operates on the simple principle that substance is the greatest style.

Pretty Nasville if I don't say so myself. Check it out here and grab the free download at their site.

God I hope I didn't mess this post up.

Under The Covers - Electric Guest - Ritual Unions

Feels Like: Future Islands, A synth-laden Robin Thicke, SUBTRKT, Phantogram
Whilst on my lunch break at work today I stumbled upon both a gem and a cover of a gem. The above video is of Electric Guest, an up and coming indie pop group really making some noise. In this radio spot they cover Little Dragon's "Ritual Union". This is what I think a bloggers dream is. Discover sweet cover and, upon investigating the original, find it's pretty dope. From what I can tell from their tour dates, both of these bands have massive appeal in the U.S. and abroad. Check it.

Here We Go Magic - How Do I Know

Feels like: Oberhofer, Yeasayer, Gardens & Villa, Chairlift, The Antlers, Kurt Vile

More laid back music to dance into the weekend with.  Check out their free downloads here.  Friday baby.

Yo Nashville: Wild Cub - Wild Light

Feels like: Cherub, TRAILS AND WAYS, Atlas Genius, Allosaurus, Coldplay, Capital Cities, Fixers, Wildcat! Wildcat!, Slam Donahue, Goldroom

Fellow Nashvillians, we have another great electropopduo currently garnering a lot of attention.  For those of you who do not know them, may I introduce to you Wild Cub.  If you love dancing, relaxing and having a great time, this may indeed be the band for you.  Check out their entire album "Youth" which is live streaming below.  Also, they will be gracing the High Watt stage August 25th, Mercy Lounge September 10th, and Soundland October 6th.  Be sure to catch them while you can. Their album officially premieres August 14th.

The XX - Chained

Feels like: Phantogram, Cherub, Broken Bells, SBTRKT, Crystal Castles, Active Child, Ratatat

Brand new single off The XX's upcoming album Coexist, "Chained" is a very relaxed song that fits in closely with their laid back sound.  Enjoy before bed, you sleepyhead.

Radiohead - The Daily Mail (Live at Bonnaroo 2012)

Feels Like: a Bonnaroo fever dream

If you've been to Bonnaroo, chances are you're going to like this video.  Set to Radiohead's performance of "The Daily Mail" from this year's festival, "Through the Woods" follows the trip of the average Roo-bian through the mystical world known as Bonnaroo.  Hitting landmarks such as Shakedown Street, the Ferris Wheel, the Silent Disco, the Broo'ers Festival, and ending up at the What Stage for Radiohead's headlining set, this journey showcases all the spots that make Bonnaroo what it is and perfectly captures the most important part, the people. Check it out!

Vacationer - Trip/Gone

Feels like: Bombay Bicycle Club, Freelance Whales, Lost Lander, Beach House, Washed Out, Midi Matilda

Check out Vacationer's new video "Trip".  Get's me ready to have one last summer hurrah.  These guys were last in Nashville opening for The Naked and Famous and they will be next be here October 7th at Exit/In playing with Bombay Bicylce Club.  I will catch y'all at that show.  Also check out their song "Gone" below.  Exceptional.

Wale & Meek Mill - 100 Hunnit

Feels Like: A sweet rap battle, Big Sean, Lupe Fiasco
So, I was going to save this one for some type of blog world-esque rainy day, but I can't hold back anymore. This one is what the kids call a 'banger' #perversionsofmodernengish. Wale and Meek Mill team up for a twist on a classic dis verse for dis verse track where they are actually giving each other compliments and just dissing the rest of us. Rappers, right? On a different note,  I just saw this music video and it couldn't be more fitting. The hip hop club scene congers up scenes from Usher's "Yeah" music video. Dope.

Lord Huron - Time to Run

Feels Like: Head and The Heart, Fleet Foxes, Dawes
All you indie fans out there, this one is a keeper and a sign of good things to come. Time to Run comes off Lord Huron's debut album Lonesome Dreams (Released October 8th for all of you concerned individuals). It has a faint folk feel but begins and builds from very dreamy eclectic roots. Take a listen and you will understand, I hope, just what I mean by that.

So my buddy Whit says this is the soundtrack little birds listen to when departing the nest for the first time. It's either that or a pack of baby cubs emerging into the light for the first time. Yeah. Whit.

Mumford and Sons - I Will Wait

Feels Like: Johnny Flynn, Punch Brothers, Ray LaMontagne

Mumford & Sons have released the first single for their upcoming album, Babel.  If you liked Sigh No More,  you'll like this as it fits into the epic-folk hoedown vibe of their debut. Enjoy!

Gardens & Villa - Spacetime

Feels like: Here We Go Magic, tUnE-yArDs, Metronomy, Vacationer, Rubblebucket, Oberhofer, Lost Lander

Here's a trippy one for ya.  Gardens and Villa is one of those few bands that covers both the happy and fun side of music while still feeling somewhat eerie and distant.  I hope y'all enjoy one of my favorites by these up and comers, and please visit their bandcamp as well.

STRFKR - Julius/Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second

Feels like: M83, Slam Donahue, MGMT, Broken Bells, Hot Chip, Yuksek, The Knocks, Wildcat! Wildcat!, Two Door Cinema Club, Bells

In a dream video reminiscent of "The Princess Bride", STRFKR captures a that lovely world between real and imaginary that brings out the inner child in everyone.  Also check out the extremely catchy "Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second" below [Free Download].  Happy Monday to ya!

Divine Fits - My Love is Real

Feels Like: Spoon, Wolf Parade, the Drive soundtrack

Soundland 2012 has been announced! Along with My Morning Jacket, Young the Giant, Jonny Corndawg, and a host of other bands, indie-supergroup Divine Fits will be performing.  Featuring members of Spoon, Wolf Parade, the Handsome Furs, and New Bomb Trucks, the band is pretty much like most amalgamations of the sort sounding somewhat like the sum of their parts and somewhat like something entirely different.  Check out their lead single "My Love is Real" below and catch them August 6th in Nashville!

Funeral Suits - All Those Friendly People/Colour Fade

Feels like: We are Scientists, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, RAC, Skrillex, Two Door Cinema Club, Fun.

I've always been a sucker for Cosby dancing.  I'm also quite the sucker for fast paced and dancy remixes of songs I already enjoy.  The Däkchär & Kill Krinkle Club remix of "All Those Friendly People" by Funeral Suits combines them in the most of elegant ways.  Also enjoy "Colour Fade" below.  Friday, it's good.

I'm Getting Ready - Michael Kiwanuka

Feels Like: Mayer Hawthorne, Ottis Retting, Mavis Staples
So I know that this one is not necessarily the most new, but this definitely classifies as music worth sharing. Michael Kiwanuka is a London native who first got his start hanging out with Labirinth, a collaborator of Tiny Tempah, and playing for Tottenham rapper Chipmunk. He ended up departing from that scene to develop his own sound and delve deeper into the sound of his chief influences,
Dylan and Retting. Good company. This one comes off his debut album Home Again and I have to tell you, my ears are digging it. Very honest, very soulful. Check it out guys.

Under the Covers: Walk the Moon - Maps

Feels like: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, tUnE-yArDs

In a very cool a capella version of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Maps", Walk the Moon reminds us once again as to why they are one of the hottest bands right now.  Enjoy safely.

Under the Covers is a segment where favorite songs are covered in a refreshing way.

Delta Spirit - White Table/California

Feels like: Dr. Dog, Cold War Kids, Deer Tick, Dawes, Pop Levi, Band of Horses

This video feels so American, and it churns from slow and mellow to high energy rock perfectly.  These guys have a remarkable sound and put on an excellent live show.  Check out their newest single "California" below.  Paper. Scissors. Rock!

Passion Pit - Constant Conversations

Feels Like: Yeasayer, James Blake, Hot Chip, Nicolas Jaar

Passion Pit have released their third video from Gossamer, following visuals for "Take a Walk" and "I'll Be Alright."  The video for RnB slow-burn, "Constant Conversations" follows PP's lead singer, Michael Angelakos as he navigates his way through a Great Gatsby-esque throwdown. The haziness and muted colors also bring to mind Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides.  Check it out!
